What MCP servers do for sales teams

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is the standard for connecting Claude to external systems. An MCP server sits between Claude and a tool like HubSpot or Salesforce, letting Claude read live data, take actions, and produce outputs that feed back into your CRM. For sales and CRM teams, this means Claude can look up a contact's history, draft a follow-up based on what happened in the last three calls, and log the result without you copy-pasting anything.

Before MCP, integrating Claude with your CRM required custom API code for each connection. MCP standardizes that interface so Claude can talk to any system that has an MCP server, whether official or custom-built. The result is a connected Claude environment where the AI actually has access to your real data instead of working from whatever context you paste in manually.

HubSpot MCP

Anthropic and HubSpot have an official MCP integration that gives Claude access to your HubSpot contacts, deals, and activity data. TEG uses this integration as the base layer for most of our sales-focused Claude automations. With HubSpot MCP active, Claude can pull a contact's full history before a call, draft personalized follow-ups based on deal stage and past communication, and flag deals that haven't been touched in too long.

The HubSpot MCP supports reads and writes. That means Claude can update deal stages, log notes, create tasks, and send emails through HubSpot, not just read data from it. For automations that need to close the loop back into your CRM, that bidirectional access matters.

Salesforce MCP

Salesforce has published an official MCP server that connects Claude to your Salesforce instance. For teams running Salesforce as their CRM, this enables the same kind of live-data access: contact lookups, opportunity summaries, pipeline reviews. TEG has used the Salesforce MCP for clients who need Claude to reason across account data without exporting anything to a spreadsheet first.

One common use pattern is pipeline hygiene. Claude can scan the Salesforce MCP for opportunities that haven't had activity in a defined window, identify which ones are at risk based on stage and close date, and produce a prioritized list for the sales leader's weekly review. That used to take an analyst an hour. With the Salesforce MCP, it runs on demand.

Slack MCP

The official Slack MCP server lets Claude read channel history, send messages, and participate in workflow triggers. For sales teams, this is useful for automations that monitor deal channels and surface issues: a deal goes quiet, a competitor is mentioned, a key contact hasn't responded in a week. Claude reads the signals and flags them without someone having to audit every channel manually.

Slack MCP is also useful for the handoff layer between sales and the rest of the organization. Claude can read a deal's Slack thread and produce a summary for the account manager, or monitor a customer success channel and flag issues that need escalation. The information is already in Slack. MCP gives Claude access to it without anyone having to copy and paste.

Linear and Jira MCPs

For B2B technology companies where sales handoffs touch engineering, the Linear and Jira MCP servers let Claude read sprint status, open issues, and roadmap items. This is useful for AEs who need to give prospects accurate timelines without asking engineering every time. Claude can read the Linear board, synthesize what's in progress and what's queued, and produce a plain-English summary the AE can share or reference on a call.

It also helps with post-sale handoffs. A solution engineer can ask Claude to summarize the open Jira tickets for a specific customer and flag which ones are blocking their expansion. Claude reads the tickets, reasons about priority and impact, and delivers the summary without the SE having to dig through the board themselves.

When to build a custom MCP

Official MCP servers cover the standard operations of their respective tools. If you need Claude to access a proprietary system (an internal deal tracking tool, a custom database, a vendor's API that doesn't have an official MCP), TEG builds custom MCP servers. A custom MCP typically takes two to three weeks to build and test, and it gives Claude the same level of live-data access to your internal tools that the official MCP servers give it to HubSpot or Salesforce.

We've built custom MCPs for clients with internal systems that store information their CRM doesn't: pricing configuration tools, capacity databases, custom product configurators. In each case, the custom MCP gave Claude access to the data it needed to handle the workflow correctly, rather than requiring the user to paste context in manually every time.
