Claude Projects vs Claude Skills: what's the difference?
What Claude Projects are
Claude Projects are a native Claude.ai feature that lets you group related conversations, attach persistent files and context, and give Claude standing instructions that apply to every conversation in that project. A project might hold your company's style guide, product documentation, or a set of instructions for how Claude should handle a specific type of work.
Projects are organizational, not programmatic. They're a way to give Claude consistent context without repeating yourself every time you start a conversation. You set them up inside Claude.ai, no code required, and they're available with Claude for Teams or Pro. The reference materials you add to a Project travel with every conversation in that project.
What Claude Skills are
Claude Skills are reusable automations built on top of Claude's API that run inside the Claude interface or via integrations. A Skill is a defined workflow: input comes in, Claude reasons through it using a specific set of instructions and tools, and output comes out in a predictable format. Skills can connect to your actual systems via MCP, pull live data, and handle multi-step reasoning tasks.
Skills require building. A Claude Partner or your own technical team writes the workflow logic, connects the integrations, tests against real data, and deploys the Skill so your team can run it reliably at volume. TEG builds Skills for B2B ops teams. That is the majority of our implementation work.
Key differences
Projects are configured by the user inside Claude.ai, no code required. Skills require building and can connect to external systems, run automated workflows, and handle structured inputs and outputs. Projects are good for personal or team workflows that benefit from consistent context. Skills are good for operational automations that need to run reliably, at volume, with consistent output.
The other difference is scope. A Project gives Claude better context for the work your team is already doing in the chat. A Skill replaces a step in your operational workflow: the human no longer has to do the work manually, the Skill does it for them and hands the output to the next step.
When to use Projects
Projects make sense when you want Claude to always have access to your company's reference documents. They're useful when you want Claude to follow a consistent format for a specific type of work, or when you're doing knowledge work that benefits from context continuity across multiple conversations. Projects are self-serve and available in Claude for Teams or Pro.
A good example is a sales team that adds their product documentation and ICP criteria to a Project. Every conversation Claude has in that project starts with the right context. That's genuinely useful, and it requires no implementation work.
When to use Skills
Skills make sense when you're automating an operational workflow that runs repeatedly. When the automation needs to pull data from or write to an external system. When you need consistent, structured output that feeds into a downstream process. When you want your whole team to run the same workflow reliably, not just configure their own Claude conversations.
Lead qualification is a clean example. A Skill pulls the new lead's data from HubSpot, reasons across the criteria, produces a qualification summary, and writes it back to the CRM. A Project cannot do that. It requires a Skill connected via MCP.
