Do you need Claude if you already have Copilot?

Copilot Chat is free in most Microsoft 365 plans and handles quick questions, rewording and short summaries. Claude adds work that gets done: connections to tools outside Microsoft, reusable team skills, scheduled tasks, a desktop agent and live documents. Keep Copilot Chat for answers and add Claude for the people whose work is more than answers.

Many of our clients tell us the same thing: "Copilot is already in our Microsoft suite and it's free. Why would we pay for Claude too?"

Fair question. The honest answer is that they do different jobs. For most teams the right move is not Claude instead of Copilot. It is knowing which people and workflows each one belongs to. Facts below are as of October 28, 2026.

What does free Copilot Chat already do?

Copilot Chat is the free assistant included with most Microsoft 365 plans. It is what most clients mean when they say Copilot is already in their suite. Microsoft also sells a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on, but this post compares Claude to the free version only.

Copilot Chat costs nothing extra, sits inside the Microsoft environment your IT team already manages and needs no new vendor review. That covers a lot of everyday work:

  • Quick questions and brainstorming
  • Rewording and summarizing short text
  • Web-grounded answers with enterprise data protection
  • No new license, vendor or rollout to manage

If your people only need a quick "enhanced search," you may not need to add anything. Here is what you would be missing.

What does Claude have that Copilot Chat does not?

  1. It works across your whole stack, not just Microsoft. Claude connects through MCP connectors to tools like HubSpot, Slack, Google Drive, GitHub and Gmail, and to Microsoft 365 as well. Copilot is strongest when everything lives in Microsoft. Most small and mid-sized businesses we work with do not live there exclusively. Their CRM, project tools and proposals sit elsewhere. See how connectors work.
  2. Projects and Artifacts. Projects keep shared context for ongoing work so every conversation does not start from a blank page. Artifacts produce live documents, dashboards and small apps you can use and share.
  3. Claude Skills. Teams can package repeatable processes as skills. This is where we see the biggest gains for clients: a process written once that the whole team can run.
  4. Scheduled tasks. Claude can run a prompt on its own at a time you choose, using your connectors and skills, for example a pipeline summary posted every Monday morning. See how to schedule a task in Claude.
  5. Claude Cowork. Cowork is a desktop agent that works with files on a person's computer and carries out multi-step tasks. Microsoft's Copilot Cowork was built with Anthropic, but as of now it is not part of the free tier. Here is how Cowork and skills fit together.
  6. It can live inside Office too. Claude add-ins for Excel, Word and PowerPoint reached general availability in May 2026, with Outlook in beta. They share context across files, and Word edits show up as tracked changes. Choosing Claude does not mean leaving Office.

This is where the gap is widest. Free Copilot Chat is built for chatting. Automation that runs on its own, reusable processes and connections to non-Microsoft tools generally sit behind a paid license or metered billing.

Which should you use, Copilot Chat or Claude?

Keep Copilot Chat on for everyone. It is free, and it is a good enhanced search. But if you want AI to do more than answer questions, get Claude.

  1. Use Copilot Chat when you want answers: quick questions, rewording, summaries.
  2. Get Claude when you want work done for you: running tasks on a schedule, following your team's repeatable processes, building automations and acting across tools outside Microsoft.
  3. Turn on the Microsoft 365 connector so Claude can still search mail and files.
  4. Pilot for 30 days with the people who do analysis, writing, proposals and research, then expand based on who actually used it.

If you want AI that searches, keep Copilot Chat. If you want AI that does, get Claude.

Frequently asked questions

Is Microsoft Copilot Chat free?

Copilot Chat is the free assistant included with most Microsoft 365 plans. Microsoft also sells a separate paid Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on, which this post does not cover.

Do I need Claude if I already have Copilot?

Not for everyone. Copilot Chat covers quick questions, rewording and short summaries well. Claude adds value for people who need work done across tools outside Microsoft, repeatable team processes, scheduled tasks and live documents.

Can Claude work inside Microsoft 365?

Yes. Claude has a Microsoft 365 connector that lets it search mail and files, and Claude add-ins for Excel, Word and PowerPoint reached general availability in May 2026, with Outlook in beta. Word edits appear as tracked changes.

Should we replace Copilot with Claude?

In our view, no. Keep Copilot Chat on for everyone because it is free and sits inside the environment your IT team already manages. Add Claude for the people who analyze, write, build proposals and run repeatable processes.
