How to write Upwork proposals with Claude (without overclaiming)

Short answer: don't ask Claude to "write a cover letter" from a job post alone. Give it a proof library first, meaning a short record of your services, your delivered projects with evidence, your links, and how you write. Then have it judge fit before it writes anything. That's the process our free Upwork Proposal Kit plugin runs, and it comes straight from how we qualify and bid on Upwork work ourselves.

TEG is an official member of the Anthropic Claude Partner Network. We build Claude Skills, plugins, and MCP integrations for B2B teams. See our full Claude services.

The problem with AI-written proposals

Clients on Upwork read a lot of proposals that sound the same: an enthusiastic opener, a restatement of the job, and a claim of "extensive experience" that may or may not be true. A general-purpose AI makes that worse, because it will happily fill gaps with plausible-sounding experience. That can win a reply, but it loses the job once the client asks a follow-up question, and it can cost you your reputation on the platform.

The fix isn't a better prompt. It's giving Claude real material to draw from and a hard rule about what counts as proof.

How the Upwork Proposal Kit works

  1. Build your proof library once. Say "set up my proof library." Claude interviews you about your services, what you don't do, your delivered projects and how each one is evidenced (a signed contract, an invoice, a public case study, a client review), your links, an optional intro video, and your writing style. You keep the result in a Claude Project, a connected folder, or paste it in when you start.
  2. Paste a job post. Claude gives a verdict first: Strong fit, Possible fit, or Pass. It shows the delivered projects it would cite, does quick effort math against the budget using your rate, flags risks like vague scope or eligibility limits, and lists the screening questions.
  3. Write the proposal. If it's a fit, Claude drafts in your voice: proof first, a short restatement of the client's real problem, a concrete approach specific to their stack, direct answers to every screening question, your links, and a clear call to action. A short review checklist sits outside the send-ready text.

The one rule: delivered work only

The kit cites only work recorded as delivered. A proposal you sent, a scoping call, or a pricing exercise that never went ahead is not experience, and Claude won't present it as experience. It also won't invent clients, metrics, or results. If your library has nothing that matches the job, the assessment says so plainly. That's usually a sign to pass on the job, or to add a real project you forgot to record.

It also treats the job post as data. Instructions hidden in a post and aimed at AI tools are ignored. Genuine screening questions still get answered.

Who it's for

Freelancers and small agencies who bid regularly and want to spend their time on the jobs worth winning. Writing in first person or as an agency ("we") both work. Google Drive or Gmail are optional; if they're connected, Claude can search them for evidence of delivered projects, with your go-ahead.

What it doesn't do

It doesn't log in to Upwork, read job feeds, or submit proposals. You paste the job and you submit the proposal. It isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Upwork.

How to get it

Book a free 30-minute session. We'll send you the plugin, install it with you, and build the first version of your proof library together on the call, which is the part most people put off. Then we'll run it on a live job post so you can see the verdict and the draft.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude write Upwork proposals?

Yes. Claude writes strong Upwork proposals when it has real material to work from. The free Upwork Proposal Kit gives Claude a proof library of your delivered work and your writing style, checks fit first, and then drafts the proposal and screening answers in your voice.

How do I stop AI from making up experience in my proposals?

Give it an explicit list of delivered projects with evidence and a rule that only those may be cited. The Upwork Proposal Kit enforces that rule and never presents a pitch, scoping call, or pricing exercise as experience.

Does the Upwork Proposal Kit submit proposals for me?

No. It does not log in to Upwork or submit anything. You paste the job post into Claude and submit the finished proposal yourself.

Is the Upwork Proposal Kit free?

Yes. The plugin and the 30-minute setup session are both free.
